Dear Covid 19

Dear COVID-19,

Why are you doing this? Who are you and what do you want?

You won’t speak and refuse to communicate. There is nothing more frustrating than talking to you. You can’t blame us for taking things into our own hands.

Beyond becoming home-bakers of sourdough bread and TikTok creators, we have emerged as more compassionate, tenacious and courageous human beings.

We are angry and hurt. We grieve over many losses. We lay awake at night confused since the world has been turned on its head. But I think you sorely underestimate us. There is nothing about you that I agree with, but for better or for worse, and definitely only for now – we shall learn to coexist.

We are a very special type of people. We learn to rise above situations through accepting and looking at life with kind and bright eyes. We learn to make the best out of any situation. We are resourceful and crafty, we will survive.

There is nothing as brave as putting up a good fight. And you, I must say, are a serious contender. But as opportunists, we choose to let you bring out the best in us. Beyond becoming home-bakers of sourdough bread and TikTok creators, we have emerged as more compassionate, tenacious and courageous human beings. And as always, we find our shred of humour in trying times. Dark humour, mostly.

To our future children, never, ever, give up. In the face of hardship and the most frustrating virus you’ve ever talked to, keep your head held high, and know you always do better.
